Around Forty-four children, on their way to school, were killed when the bus carrying them fell into the 60-foot deep Narmada canal at Bodeli village in Gujarat on Wednesday morning.
"44 bodies, most of them of children, have been fished out so far," said DSP Vadodara (Rural) Amit Vishwkarama.
According to the District Collector Vijay Nehra, four children were rescued from the canal.
The GSRTC (Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation) bus was on its way from Targol to Bodeli when the mishap occurred after the driver apparently lost control over the vehicle.
Senior officials including the Collector and the DSP were at the spot, about 60 kms from Vadodara, to oversee the rescue operations.
Most of the passengers were children going to school. The water released into the canal through the Sardar Sarovar Dam was stopped to aid the rescue operations. The bus was later taken out of the canal.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the next of the kin of the victims.
